What is a reborn?

A reborn doll is a vinyl baby doll or kit that has been customized by a process of repainting and enhancement to resemble a real life baby. The process of creating a reborn doll in this way is referred to as reborning.

The technique of reborning has evolved over the past few years, as crafters and doll artists have refined painting and hair rooting techniques to add there individual interpretation of how reborn doll or vinyl kit can resemble real babies once completed. Further enhancements, such as a beating heart and breathing mechanism can be added to a collector requirements.

Reborning Methods.

The technique of reborning a play doll  involves the following processes:

  • The doll is disassembled and all the factory paint is removed.
  • Alternatively a ready to use vinyl kit can be purchased ready to use.
  • The outside of the doll  is painted using various techniques, to add the appearance of translucent skin tones and effects such as veins, mottling, and "milk-spots" to resemble the skin tone and texture of a newborn baby.
  • Realistic blown glass or the latest polymer eyes are added.
  • Hair and eyelashes, are applied using rooting tools, and felting needles, along with fine soft baby mohair.
  • The original dolls body is replaced with a soft stuffed and weighted cotton or doe suede body.
  • Magnets may be attached inside the mouth to allow the doll to have a dummy/pacifier. Magnets placed inside the head can allow various magnetised hair accesories to be added when desired.

Once completed, the reborn doll is no longer suitable as a child's play doll.

Satisfaction.

The many hours of work that go into creating a life like doll will bring years of joy and satisifaction, either for the creator to keep for theirself or one of the many collectors of this progressive artform.

Community.

The Reborn community is ever expanding wether it be more people collecting the finished dolls or new artists wanting a new hobby or a fresh challange. Various online forums and guilds have been formed over the years to provide a place where like minded people can share experiences and techniques. Having been members of some of these forums we decided in January 2008 to form our own forum called www.Acorn-Guild.co.uk where everyone from a beginner to an experienced Reborn Artist are treat equally and without prejudice.
